Dear Colleagues, I am curious as to your reaction to this episode of Family Guy. http://blogs.jta.org/telegraph/article/2009/10/06/1008348/family-guy-finds-judaism Do shows like these reinforce age-old antisemitic canards? When does humor becom...

Dear Colleagues, My sister sent me this article http://forward.com/articles/112465/ and I found it to be most poignant. How can we as Holocaust educators (if you feel we should) distinguish between the then and the now? How do we teach Auschwitz...

Dear Colleagues, I do not know if many of you (or any of you) face this problem. I do, however. During the course of the teacher development sessions I have run, I always ask the participants how they teach the Holocaust, what activites, books, e...

Pam, I agree with your point that to discuss/commemorate the other victims in proper historical proportion emphasizes the evil that was done by the perpetrators rather than detracting from the fact that the Jews were the main targets.

Emily -- Thanks for emailing me re: this topic. First, applause to the Manhattan Beach community for the park project! I assume this was city-owned land, so I wonder if there is a statement of purpose on file somewhere. If the land was specificall...

Dear Colleagues and Friends, Last week's shooting of Officer Johns rattled me. I think because the attack took place at the USHMM and I felt somehow that the Holocaust was under attack that it made me react so strongly. In discussing the shooting...

Hi Karen, I really like the phrase you included, "the Nazi net of death." As you correctly write the net was cast for Jews and others were caught up in it. To answer some questions: As far as a I know, the land belongs to the Parks Department and...

Hi Al, Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I,too, can see both sides of the story. It is quite a difficult position to be in and as time passes, I wonder if the best way to "keep the story and memory of the Holocaust alive" is to share the histo...

First, I thank you for sharing this; I had no idea it existed! Next, I am already concerned that people are using the false "5 million" number to discuss other victims. When and how can we help to put that false number to rest? Finally, I do not t...

Thought-provoking post, Emily. I'm friendly with a few Witnesses from that era, so weigh my response accordingly. The test for me is commonality of experience. Did members of these other groups suffer in proportional numbers and under similar sett...

Emily,
Thanks for your comments about No Way Out. It has been such a blessing to have found the letters which teach a piece of this history many don't know. On a personal level, the letters have served as a legacy to those whose lives were lost, helping us to remember them as ordinary people not just victims. I look forward to reading everyone's contributions in The Call of Memory and to hopefully meeting those I don't know.

Hey Carrie,

I, too, am enjoying this new technology! Did you 'check out' my forum questions? Just go to 'forum' and read my thoughts and respond . . then we can all be part of one conversation!
I am looking forward to seeing you in CT.

Hi Emily,
Technology such as this is still new to me but it's really fun to communicate like this. Cool. You're the first to leave me a comment! :) Thank you.

Yes, I'll be in CT next weekend. I am looking forward to it! See you then.

Hi Emily,
Luckily her comment is still on your page. The easiest thing to do is to ask Pam to copy her answer from your page and paste it in the forum discussion.

Hi Emily, I am so sorry, but I will not be able to attend this year. Family commitment again. Have you seen the new title by Sid Fleischman? It just won the Sydney Taylor. I don't know what i think about it... title is:The Entertainer and the Dybbuk. Ask around...

Hi, Emily! Thanks for asking about my year -- it's going very well. I don't think BG is capable of this level of technology; Karen and I both thought of asking him to join, but I think simple e-mail is a stretch for him. I will try to copy off what's been said about his book, though, and e-mail it to him. Bill Younglove asked me to be involved in a roundtable discussion at next year's NCTE -- I'm so excited! How are things going with you?

One more thing...
You are raising a very important discussion question in your blog post. Maybe it should be a forum question and not a blog. This is just a suggestion...

Hi Emily,
You posted a very interesting question, but I noticed that the blog post is closed, which means that other people cannot respond to you. You can easily change this by checking the definitions of your blog post.

That's a great idea! We already have Rachmil Bryks' daughters signed up. I'm not sure how many of them would be willing to do it, but it is worth a try.

Do we need to be flexible?

Here is what I am thinking about . . .

Recently, I was on the site www.brainpop.com, under the category of Social Studies and then the topic, Holocaust. I watched their short animated video about the Holocaust and after discussing the clip with one of my teachers, noticed some errors. For example, the chronology was out of order and they never explained that Poland was invaded. Th
