Call of Memory

Learning about the Holocaust through Narrative

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Last week's shooting of Officer Johns rattled me. I think because the attack took place at the USHMM and I felt somehow that the Holocaust was under attack that it made me react so strongly. In discussing the shooting of Officer John and his heroic act with a respected colleague, I suggested that perhaps we might teach about him as a rescuer or someone who was not a bystander. While I know these terms are reserved for people during the Holocaust, I wonder whether people who today defend and protect the memory of the Holocaust ought to have their own "name." The colleague with whom I was speaking told me that she did not feel he merited a special "designation" because "just like a police officer or a fireman, he was doing his job."

What do you think?
